RESUMO

Binuclear palladium(II) complexes with metal-metal (d8-d8) bonding interaction were synthesized by reactions of the 1-methyl-1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazole-5-thiol (Hmtzt) or a mixture of Hmtzt and 1,3-propanediamine (1,3-pda) ligands. Complex [Pd2(µ-mtzt)4]·2CH3CN (1) was synthesized by the reaction of Pd(OAc)2 with Hmtzt dissolved in acetonitrile and complex [Pd2(µ-mtzt)2(mtzt)2(1,3-pda)] (2) was synthesized by reaction of a mixture of Hmtzt and 1,3-propanediamine (dissolved in methanol) with PdCl2 (dissolved in acetonitrile) and were identified through elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, 1H NMR, luminescence spectroscopy as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. A single-crystal of complex 1 shows that two Pd(II) centers are linked together by four bridging tetrazole ligands providing a paddle wheel-like arrangement. Also a crystal structure of complex 2 shows that this complex possesses a symmetric structure in which one Pd atom is tetra-coordinated by four sulfur atoms to forms PdS4 and other Pd atom is tetra-coordinated by four nitrogen to forms PdN4 coordination sphere. Density functional theory (DFT) was performed in this study for the Hmtzt ligand and binuclear palladium(II) complexes (1) and (2). The DFT calculation shows PdII-PdII bond lengths of 2.831 and 3.086Å in complex 1 and 2, respectively which are close to the observed bond lengths of 2.802(11) and 3.0911(17)Å from single-crystal X-ray structure. The optimized geometry of the complexes is shown good agreement by X-ray data. Structural properties and molecular descriptors including bond lengths, bond angles, chemical hardness, dipole moment, HOMO-LUMO energy levels, electron transfer were analyzed. The IR spectroscopy was performed using VEDA4 software and UV-Vis spectra were analyzed using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) method. The theoretical and experimental data were also compared with each other.

RESUMO

Glomangiosarcoma represents a rare malignant variant of the benign glomus tumor that typically presents as a tender, slowly growing nodule with a predilection for the lower extremities. Unlike their benign counterparts, glomangiosarcomas may display aggressive characteristics such as large size, local invasion, and a tendency to recur after excision. Although wide local excision remains the treatment of choice, rare cases of systemic metastasis have been previously reported. We present a case of glomangiosarcoma arising at a prior biopsy site after excision of an unknown soft tissue lesion.

The investigation of magnetic ordering in magnetic molecular conductors is the subject of ongoing research studies in the fields of condensed matter physics, chemistry and material sciences. Following the photo-magnetic behavior already observed in individual (FeCl4)2(py·H)3Cl molecules at room temperature, magnetic ordering is studied in this work. Calculations are performed using spin projected broken symmetry via density functional theory within the scheme of the B3LYP approximation. The value of the intra-molecular magnetic coupling constant is obtained as J = 13.2062 kJ mol(-1). A field dependent magnetization experiment is conducted to validate the magnitude and the sign of the exchange constant. Reasonable consistency of experimental and theoretical results confirms the presence of a positive intra-molecular indirect exchange interaction. This work paves the way for possible introduction of a new molecule in the development of advanced molecular electronic devices.

IFN-gamma has been implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental cerebral malaria (ECM). We have used mice lacking the alpha chain of the IFN-gamma receptor (KO mice) to define its role in the pathogenesis of ECM. Infected KO mice did not develop ECM and showed no leukocyte or parasite sequestration in the brain, and no hemorrhages. The resistance of KO mice to ECM was associated with the absence of any increases of TNF-alpha and ICAM-1 proteins in the brain, which are both essential for ECM. Wild-type (WT) mice which do not develop ECM, despite increased local production of TNF-alpha protein, showed no leukocyte accumulation in the brain and this was correlated with the absence of ICAM-1 protein from brain microvessels. KO mice infected with 106 parasitized erythrocytes (PE) of Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA) did not develop ECM, but they had high parasitemia and died earlier than WT mice which did not develop ECM. However, KO mice did not develop higher parasitemia than WT mice when both groups were infected with a lower dose (5x10(5) PE) of PbA-infected red blood cells. This indicates that different doses of PE may trigger different IFN-gamma responses and that there may be a threshold concentration for protection against parasitemia.

Infection with Plasmodium berghei ANKA is usually lethal. The parasite causes in some mouse strains a neurovascular syndrome, experimental cerebral malaria (ECM), involving immunopathological reactions. The effects on the development of ECM of the mouse genetic background have been clearly demonstrated, but nothing is known about the effects of the clonal diversity of the parasite. We showed that various cloned lines derived from a polyclonal line of P. berghei ANKA caused ECM but that the extent of ECM induction was dependent on the amount of inoculum. Subtle differences in ECM characteristics (survival time and hypothermia) were also observed. We also confirmed, using the 1.49L cloned line, that the mouse genetic background strongly affects ECM.
